Why This Region Is Different
Space Coast: What Drives Rodent Problems Here
The Space Coast has the most distinctive housing story of any region we cover. Brevard County expanded rapidly through the 1960s as the space programme drew workers to the Cape, and a very large share of the housing stock still dates from that concentrated window. Thousands of homes built within a few years of each other, to the same construction standards and the same soffit and fascia detailing.
What that means practically is that they fail together. Original aluminium soffit is held by a channel at the wall and a channel at the fascia, and both move with thermal cycling. Sixty Florida summers is enough to work a panel out of the fascia channel across an entire elevation, not just at one point. Exclusion across Cocoa, Rockledge, Melbourne, Satellite Beach and Titusville is frequently measured in full runs rather than individual patches, which is why it quotes higher than the square footage suggests, and it is why infestations here cluster along streets rather than staying in one property.
The second regional condition is salt. Brevard is a barrier island county with the Atlantic on one side and the Indian River Lagoon on the other, and on the islands salt reaches every elevation from two directions. It attacks the cut edges of galvanised mesh far faster than mainland installers expect, so a seal fitted to standard inland practice can begin failing within a few years while looking entirely sound from the ground.
The third is protected land. Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, the Archie Carr refuge shore and the scrub sanctuaries hold permanent populations that will never be cleared or treated. Inland and north, Mims and Scottsmoor are rural country where crawl spaces, outbuildings and house mice matter more than salt ever does.

Before You Hire
What To Ask Any Company Working In This Region
The right questions differ by region, because the conditions do. These are the ones that matter most across Space Coast.
- Is the soffit being closed along the full run, or only where noise was heard? On Apollo era stock the separation is usually continuous along an elevation.
- What mesh, and will the cut edges be sealed? On the islands this is the most common reason exclusion fails early.
- Is the underside in scope? On rural north Brevard property with a crawl space, a coastal survey will skip it entirely.
- Are the outbuildings included? On acreage the population frequently lives in a shed or barn before it reaches the house.
The Season Here
When Space Coast Rodent Calls Spike
- Late October through February, the cool season push. Brevard gets a mild but genuine cold break, and it is the highest volume residential window.
- Hurricane season, June through November. Hurricane Nicole came ashore in November 2022 and this coast felt it. Flooded lagoon margin harborage pushes populations up.
- Spring breeding. Populations that overwintered inside expand in spring, turning a faint November problem into obvious March noise.
- Summer heat and drought. Heat dries outdoor water and afternoon flooding disrupts ground nests, both pushing rodents indoors in July.
On the 2026 season: NOAA has maintained a below normal outlook, and as of early August the Atlantic season had produced two named tropical storms, Arthur and Bertha, with no hurricanes. Colorado State University’s August outlook called for nine named storms, four hurricanes and one major. That means this year’s pressure is seasonal rather than storm driven, which makes now a sensible window to get a house sealed.

Are the operators you refer licensed?
Yes. Florida regulates pest control under Chapter 482, Florida Statutes, administered by FDACS, and rodent work falls under General Household Pest and Rodent Control. Your assigned operator provides their licence number on your written estimate and you can verify it through the FDACS licensee search at fdacs.gov.
Do you use poison?
Not as a default. A poisoned rat does not go outside to die, it dies inside your wall, which turns a rodent job into an odour job. And rodenticide creates secondary poisoning risk for Florida owls, hawks and other raptors, as well as for pets.
How long does the whole job take?
Sealing is typically one to two days on site depending on the structure and the number of openings. Trapping and verification run alongside and generally take two to four weeks before zero activity is confirmed. Attic restoration, if needed, is scheduled after that.
What size gap can a roof rat get through?
Anything larger than about half an inch, roughly the diameter of a quarter. House mice need considerably less, which is why mouse exclusion is finer detail work.
Does homeowners insurance cover rodent damage?
Generally no. Insurers treat infestation as gradual and preventable rather than sudden and accidental, and most standard Florida policies exclude rodent damage. Secondary damage is the exception: if rodents chew wiring and cause a fire, the fire damage may be covered while removal and the chewed wiring are not.
